Tips on Lisa’s Quilting Supplies
Arteza Quilting Ruler (2 ½” x 18”)
I love Arteza quilting rulers. They are designed with clear black and lime line colours which help prevent getting your cuts wrong. There is a thick lime-green line around the outer edge so that you get your ½” and 1/4" cuts exact every time.
Arteza offers a variety of quilting rulers. Please see the link below on Amazon.
I highly recommend this brand and this product.

Bobbin Winder (for Brother, Babylock, Singer, Janome) (Kungfuking brand)
This high-speed bobbin winder is so handy for winding multiple bobbins in preparation of piecing a quilt top together. It saves you all the time of unthreading your machine to re-thread to wind the bobbin and then to re-thread your sewing machine, again for quilting.
I have several sizes of bobbins for my Janome and Kenmore sewing machines and this machine winds them all with ease. It fits: Type M, Type L, Type 15 or any ¼” (0.64 cm) center hole bobbin.
This would be a great item to add to your quilting wish list. Not a must, but a nice to have.

Bohin Extra-Fine Chalk Pencil
If you need to make temporary markings on your quilt pattern pieces, this is the pen to use. Bohin brand replacement chalk comes in a variety of colours to accommodate a variety of quilt piece colours. The colours I most commonly use are: white, yellow and green (green looks like a light blue on the fabric), but you can also buy it in gray and pink.

Curved Awl for Sewing (Clover brand)
Safety first. This is a good safety tool to use instead of your fingernail to push fabric under or through the feed dogs. It has a unique curved and pointed end which holds the fabric underneath the tip and in place helping you to piece more accurately.
It is about 6” long by ½” round at the handle.
I love this little tool and would highly recommend it for safety.

Clover Quilting Pins (Fine)
These are my go-to piecing quilt pins. I use them every time I piece quilts together. What I like best about these pins is how thin they are. They are incredibly thin. In the old days, you were able to run just about any size of pin through your feed dogs with ease, but the newer machines will catch the pin, crimp or break the pin and break the sewing needle. If you go slowly over these pins, you can keep them in place as you sew your quilt pieces together which improves your ability to match the seams on the quilt pieces.
Because they are sharp and ever so thin, they insert into your fabric with ease. There are 100 pins in each pack that are .2” thick and about 1.9” long – nice and long for my large fingers… The pin heads are iron-proof glass.
I buy the 3-pack, but they also come in the single pack so you can try them out and decide for yourself.

Countertop Water Distiller (Gowintech 110V 750W 4L, brushed stainless steel)
Thousands have lived without love, not one without water. (W.H. Auden)
I used distilled water in all of my irons – I just do. I use it in other equipment around the house, so I find it efficient to make my own distilled water. This little number does the job. I make about 10 - 4L jugs twice a year.
If you buy this product, you will also want to order some 45% vinegar to clean it between batches.
I highly recommend this product.

Curved Tip Quilting Scissors ( Havel’s brand, 5 1/2 “)
Have you ever experienced that feeling of your heart panicking when you go to snip a thread and realize you sniped the fabric? I have, and that means stopping the whole quilting process to mend the hole you just made in your fabric. Not to mention, your mended fabric will never look new again. Put those days behind you with these curved-tip quilting scissors.
Havel’s curved tip quilting scissors are made from Japanese stainless steel. Their double ground edges provide silky-smooth and precise cutting. Their handles are large enough to fit my large fingers, and I love the bright, pink colour.
I highly recommend this product. I purchased mine online at Amazon.

Dritz Disappearing Ink Marking Pen
How do I love thee? Let me count thy ways… (Elizabeth Barrett Browning)
This is the best all-around marking pen on the market. Its disappearing abilities lead to many forms of cost savings and time efficiencies. There are too many uses for this marker to list them all, so I would recommend you try it and watch your list grow.
Most notably, I use this to mark up the stitching patterns on client quilt tops that I will then use to longarm their quilt.
This Dritz brand marker has water-soluble, disappearing ink that keeps your markings visible for only a short period of time so you can use them and forget about them. You will never have to go back to your project and try to remove these markings.
I highly recommend this product and this brand.

Dritz Omnigrid Double Suction Cup Ruller Grip
This wonderful tool has two large suction cups with a handy locking device that holds the exact position you want it to be in on your template ruler. I have mine lodged onto my large 6 ½” x 24” Dritz Omnigrid quilter’s ruler. Because the grip is so strong, I can hold my ruler in perfect place so it does not slip, and so that I do not have to have sticky-grips on the back side of my ruler.
I love this tool. I couldn’t live without it, so I highly recommend this tool and this brand.
It is a large tool about 10”L x 2.25”W.

Dritz Sewer’s Aid
Before I became a longarm quilter, I quilted traditionally using a variety of threads. I still stock these threads and use them on my personal projects as they may be the perfect colour match. However, some of my threads are not suitable on my longarm machine. When I use my traditional threads, I spray the spool with Sewer’s Aid which allows me to use just about any thread on my longarm machine. I dilute several drops in a spray bottle and mist my thread. It really helps stop thread breakage.
Sewer’s Aid is a clear, non-staining lubricant.
I would highly recommend this product.

Dritz Soft Comfort Thimble (Green)
This is a comfortable, flexible thimble. I have large fingers, so I always had to squeeze the tips of my fingers into the old fashioned metal thimbles, and then occasionally take the thimble off to give my finger-tip a break. But this flexible thimble comes in three sizes, so you can choose one that fits the tip of your finger.
In addition to hand stitching, I use mine for mending, embroidery and cross-stitch. It comes in a vibrant green colour.

Elmers X-treme Extra Strength Washable School Glue Stick
This arts and crafts glue stick works great to help hold fabric in place while piecing or applying applique. I use this sparingly or on a one-off basis. For more permanent fabric holds, I use Pellon Wonder Under Fusible Web.
This household glue works on a variety of surfaces and dries clear. It is acid free, non-toxic and washes off hands and out of your fabric.

Heat Erasable Fabric Pens (UOWAN brand, 6 colours, with 6 resuable pens)
I’m sharing this marker with you with the caveat that I use them specifically on piecing that I will iron or steam thereby removing the ink from my fabric. This marker will not disappear until it is exposed to heat, so I can mark up hundreds of quilt pieces (like the half-square triangle) and then sew them at my leisure. Let’s say, for example, you are creating a number of Flying Geese pieces, you need to mark diagonally (across the square) and this is the perfect tool.
This brand comes in six colours (red, rose, blue, black, silver and white), is non-toxic, odour free, environmentally friendly and will vanish when exposed to heat or steam. It works on fabric, footwear and leather. I especially like the see-through ink refill that shows how much ink is left in each refill.
Buyers beware: Markings made with this pen may re-appear if exposed to cold temperatures. For this reason, I only use this pen to mark a line that I will sew on or cut away, but will ultimately be hidden inside of a seam not on top of my quilt.

Heat Erasable Pens for Quilting (Master LED Sign brand)
I’m sharing this marker with you with the caveat that I use them specifically on piecing that I will iron or steam thereby removing the ink from my fabric. This marker will not disappear until it is exposed to heat, so I can mark up hundreds of quilt pieces (across the square) and then sew them at my leisure. Let’s say, for example, you are creating a number of Flying Geese pieces, you need to mark diagonally across the square and this is the perfect tool.
This brand comes in two colours (red and blue), is non-toxic, odour free, environmentally friendly and will vanish when exposed to heat or steam. You can write as you would with a pen, so you can make very precise markings on your quilt pieces. It works on fabric, footwear and leather.
Buyers beware: Markings made with this pen may re-appear if exposed to cold temperatures. For this reason, I only use this pen to mark a line that I will sew on or cut away, but will ultimately be hidden inside of a seam not on top of my quilt.

HeatnBond UltraHold Iron-On Adhesive (17” x 35yds)
HeatnBond is a heat activated, permanent, double-sided adhesive excellently suited for applique quilting or applique crafts. It comes attached to a thin tracing paper so that you can trace to your exact pattern or shape dimensions. Alternatively, you can cut shapes from the HeatnBond roll, iron them to fabric and then cut to your exact size or shape. It is a fantastic, versatile product.
I also use this product when mending, and I would highly recommend this product.

Ironing Board Cover and Pad (Extra Thick Heavy Duty Padded 4 layers)
Oh my goodness -- do I ever love this ironing board cover! It is a dream, with its extra thick, heavy duty padded (4 layers) non-stick, scorch and stain resistant cover. The cover (the first layer) is breathable, non-chemical laminate cotton. The felt padding (the second layer) is heat resistant. Then comes the foam (the third layer) which aids in the steam circulation. Lastly (the fourth layer) is another layer of thick felt lining. I would call this an ironing board cover sandwich (that was a quilting joke…)
I have the top pattern shown in the picture to the side.

Magnetic Pin Cusion with Drawer (Beaditive brand)
I go through a number of sewing pins each month. If they jam underneath my feed-dogs, I have to throw them away. It is so handy to have another supply of pins in the bottom drawer of this magnetic pin holder to replenish my stock as I need it.
I have the Turquoise colour which is approximately 4.1”L x 2.75” W x 1.4”H
I would highly recommend this brand and this item.

Natural Cotton Quilt Batting (Vuwuma Brand)
Every now-and again you try something new and are pleasantly surprised. That is what I experienced with this product. It comes in a variety of sizes, but it is the scrumptious feel of this batting that hooked me. It is cotton with scrim added and yet soft, soft, soft on both sides.
The manufacturer advises against using this for microwavable products because of the scrim. I use mine for baby quilts – two in a pack. It is great for many other crafts where you need a smaller piece of batting.
It is important to note that this brand of batting it is on the thin side for 100% cotton batting, so you may want to use both pieces on one quilt to get the loft you want from the stitching.
I purchased mine online at Amazon. Press here for the Amazon Link
Natural Cotton Quilt Batting (YVIIWL Brand, 100% natural cotton)
This “Exquisite” quilt batting is 100% natural cotton with NO scrim. It is 100% premium cotton that has been washed, combed and has been specially mercerized. Mercerising cotton makes it stronger, reduces the lint factor and renders it more resistant to mildew, so a big plus for quilters. The process of mercerizing also improves the tear strength, reduces shrinkage and gives the cotton a silk-like feel.
This batting is approximately 1/3” thick and produces a nice loft on your finished quilt. I recommend washing your finished quilt in lukewarm water with a gentle or biodegradable laundry soap and allowing it to air dry.
I would highly recommend this product. I purchased mine online at Amazon.

OLFA 18mm Rotary Cutter
This OLFA rotary cutter is ultra razor sharp made from high-quality stainless steel for superior edge retention. It can be used by a right-hander or a left-hander. Blade replacement is easy with a screw on/off attachment holder. This cutter also has a blade protector that can be move forward to protect the blade, or backward for cutting.
I only use my rotary blades for cutting material, but this handy little cutter can be used on paper or film for small-scale projects that have tight curves or corners. It is ideal for applique and trimming seams.
I recommend this product. I purchased mine online at Amazon. Press here for the Amazon Link
OLFA 18mm Rotary Replacement Blades
Pro Tip: This small rotary cutter gets into rounded-edge cutting with ease. It is a good idea to keep a few replacements on hand.
Pro-Tip: Always keep a sharp blade in your cutter. A dull blade will lead to pushing harder which will lead to potential accidents, so replace your blades once they start to become dull.
These blades are sharp and strong, strong enough to cut through several layers of material or to cut through thick material.
The replacement blades that I use are OLFA brand, made of stainless steel for sharpness and durability.

OLFA 60mm Straight Handle Rotary Cutter
This is the largest rotary cutter I have. It is amazing and potentially dangerous because its blade is so large and so sharp. The OLFA 60mm rotary blade easily cuts 8 layers of quilting fabric creating time efficiencies as you cut out your quilt pieces. This rotary cutter is large and fits securely in your hand.
Safety Tip: Always remember to secure the safety blade cover with each use.
OLFA brand is a good all around brand in my opinion. I have several of their products and have not experience any problems with any of them.
I would highly recommend this product and this brand.

OLFA 60mm Rotary Cutter Replacement Blades (Set of 5)

Panasonic NIWL607P Cordless 360 Freestyle Steam/Dry Iron (quilt piece pressing)
This is a handy quilt-piecing tool. It can be used in all directions. It has an easy-glide, ceramic soleplate that glides over my fabric with ease. It is small and light weight making it the perfect iron to go with my 17” x 24” wool ironing mat. I love the Rose Gold colour – it make my studio look snappy! It also comes with a carrying case, so I can take it with me and trust the specially coated bottom will not get scratched. It holds water for steam, but I generally use mine for dry ironing. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that it is cordless!
The only down-side to this product is that it shuts off if unused for 10 minutes, and anyone who quilts knows that 10 minutes can fly by very quickly when you are piecing a big quilt… Buyers beware…
I purchased mine online at Amazon. Press here for the Amazon Link
Pellon Wonder Under Fusible Web (Heavy Duty) (15” x 3yds)
I have been using this product for over 40 years. Pellon became a thing in 1950, so it has been around for a long time and is very reliable. My speciality is baby blankets. I create custom baby blankets using the parent’s baby-room themes and their colours by tracing shapes, figures, cartoon or kids colouring book pictures such as a “farm” themed quilt for a farmer’s baby! I just love this stuff and can’t say enough good things about it. I primarily use it for applique, but it works well as an interfacing and very well for mending.
It has no grain, so it can be placed in any direction on your fabric. It is 100% machine stitchable and does not bunch up glue on your needle. It has a paper tracing backing, and its 100% acid-free. I recommend hand wash and air dry for all of my products, but you can machine wash and tumble dry this product on low heat.

Plantronic Voyager 6200 Uc B6200 Black Headset
I have a brain injury, so I think and work differently. One thing that really helps me is to have a headset on that plays white noise in the background. This Plantronics headset is the best of the best – and I have been through many headsets, so I’m telling you the truth. It connects to all of your devices via blue-tooth. You can listen to your iPad Podcasts, or on your PC. You can take calls, or just wear it and be ready to take a call. I love mine, and I use it all day, every day. It has a 9-hour, built-in lithium battery life.
I highly recommend this product. It’s made in China, but is an American founded company.

Professional Garment Pattern Notcher (Walfront brand)
A pattern notcher is used to cut out small snips of fabric so that the fabric can easily open in either a concave (inward curve) or a convex (outward curve). Say for example notching out the concave curve on the Drunkard’s Path quilt piece. This allows the curve to open to a full, straight extent removing the possibility that the fabric will tear over time. It also helps to relieve the fabric so that the concave piece precisely meets the convex piece when sewing together.
This brand is made from stainless steel, and the notch is about 1/4” in size. It has a spring handle which helps you move across your fabric quickly reducing hand fatigue. I only use mine on fabric, but you can use this on other crafts and hobbies such as paper patterns and cards.
I recommend this product, and I purchased mine online at Amazon.

Quilter’s Clapper (Love Sew brand)
These are by far the best clappers I have used. I have six of them, and I would highly recommend them.
Mine are a solid, natural wood material. They have no odour and do not leave any stains even thought I use a great deal of steaming on my quilt pieces.
Mine are 8.5” x 2.2” x 1.8” in size.
I purchased mine online at Amazon. Press here for the Amazon Link
Quilting Gloves
The first time I purchased these gloves, I bought a medium size – like my winter gloves. But they stretched out and consequently lost their effectiveness. You need to have a quilting glove that fits your hand quite snuggly because you are pushing the quilt sandwich around underneath your hand with a great deal of pressure. You also need that firm grip, so the second time I purchased one size smaller than my regular hand size. The smaller size fits and works perfectly.
I use these gloves when quilting on my Janome home quilting machine, and I use one just on my left hand when I am piecing on my professional straight-sew machine.
These gloves are a great idea, and I highly recommend this product.

Quilting Seam Roller (Clover brand)
This is my favourite sewing tool of all time. I have one in every room of my house that I use for sewing or quilting.
This tool has traditionally been used in sewing leather because you cannot iron leather flat. You have to roll it flat. Those of us, who have sewn leather goods, quickly realized this powerful tool had so many more uses. I have my original tool right beside me as I piece my quilts together. Instead of ironing my seams, I roll them open and skip all the ironing required in piecing together a quilt top. The only time I have to iron my quilt top is when it is complete, and I am ready to put it on my longarm quilting rack. This saves a great deal of time and the cost of keeping an iron hot and ready for use.
This tool is about 4.75” long and .9” across. It fits perfectly in my hand.
I would highly recommend this tool, and specifically this brand.
I purchased mine online at Amazon. Press here for the Amazon Link
Quilting Thread Cutter (Daisy shape)
The reason I bought this wonderful little tool is that I was tired of snipping between strings of sewn quilt pieces and snipping into the fabric. That can’t happen with this type of cutter as the blade is recessed and the only thing you can get down to the blade’s surface is a piece of thread.
The Daisy sits by friction in the base and can be advanced as you need to move to a sharper place on the cutting wheel. This tool recycles old 45mm rotary blades, so that’s a bonus. The base has an anti-skid bottom and pretty much stays in place as you cut your quilt pieces apart.
This is a nice-to-have quilting tool that would make a great gift for quilter friend.
I recommend this product. I purchased mine online at Amazon.

Rubber Mallet (Goldblue brand) (Handmade, Double-Headed Plastic and Rubber Hammer)
This tool was originally designed to be used in the sewing of leather goods, but it comes in really handy when you stitch several quilt piece seams together and they form a lump on your quilt top. You can gently knock this lump down by pounding with your mallet. Not only will this reduce the size of the lump of fabric going under your presser foot, but it stresses the fabric and causes it to relax so it will be easier to stitch through on both your standard sewing machine and on my longarm machine.
My mallet is 9.4”L x 2.4” H in size.
I would highly recommend this tool, and specifically this brand.

Schmetz Jeans Denim Sewing Machine Needles (Size 110/18)
I like Schmetz sewing machine needles because they fit on all home sewing machines. I particularly stock the Size 18 Denim needles because they are strong. The last thing I want is to break a needle when I am sewing through several layers of fabric on the seam joints of my quilt piecing.
You will sew with ease (with these needles) through many layers of denim (or twill materials), canvas, coiled bowls or coiled rugs, and multiple seam layers of quilt piecing with professional results. This is particularly important to me when I do mending.

Self Healing Rotating Cutting Mat (Crafters Dream brand, 14” round)
Cut safely with this 360 degree, 14” rotating cutting board. Tricky 30, 40 or 60 degree angles can be cut with precision as you rotate your way around any pattern piece.
This cutting mat has a locking position, so you will not worry that any shifting will take place ruining your cut. This board is broken down into ½ and ¼ inch cutting measurements.
Its self-healing properties means that the mat moves back to its original state with each cut reducing damage and ensuring durability and long lasting quality.
I purchased mine online at Amazon. Press here for the Amazon Link
Self Healing Rotating Cutting Mat (Calibre Art brand, 18” square)
This is the perfect tool to use in conjunction with your half-square triangle cutting template. First, you place your sewn fabric onto the mat, then place your half-square cutting template on top of your fabric and in line with the mat cutting lines and then begin cutting. You do not have to move your fabric or your template. You only swivel this cutting mat to maneuver to your next cut position.
The Calibre Art brand mat surface is long-lasting, self-healing and smooth. It is made of the most stringent chemical standards to form the quality of the mat’s surface. The grid lines are perfectly accurate ensuring precise, straight-line cuts every time. The base is non-slip keeping this mat in place during every cut.
I recommend this product by this brand. I purchased both the 18” mat and the half-square triangles rulers online at Amazon.

Silicone Bobbin Holder (Baoblaze brand, Top of thread spool holder)
Wow, why didn’t they have this kind of stuff when I was a kid? I love these little bobbin holder. All of my thread has a matching bobbin spool pre-wound and attached to the top of the spool. I use these predominately for the very specialized, coloured thread and for my embroidery thread. For my most common threads (white, tan and off-white) I have five bobbins fill and sitting loose on the side of my sewing machine.
I have had this brand for many years and they have kept their shape. I would highly recommend this tool and this brand.

Small Bias Quilting Ruler (Dimensions brand)
This is a great tool for anyone who sews on their own bias quilt finish. This tool gives you a perfect 45 degree angle for each end of your bias strip helping you to piece the strips together with perfection. To add to its benefits, it is a perfect 2 ½” wide, so it lies on top of your bias and confirms you have the correct width.
I also use this tool for cutting many of my half-square triangles as this tool has a ¼” cut line on the short side. It is small and easy to maneuver around my cutting mat.
I recommend this tool from this brand. I purchased mine online at Amazon.

Precut 10” Square Cotton Fabric Charm Pack (Soimoi Batik brand prints)
Soimoi Batik precut 10” quilting squares are a gift. I mean they arrive packaged like a wonderful gift. I just love that, and I am sure you will too. The packaging says it all when the manufacturer goes to great lengths to protect and to display their products this well. I always worry when I buy fabric online, because I never know what I am going to get. I put a lot of work into my quilt projects. The final product is entirely dependent on the quality of the material that I use to make the quilt top. Soimoi Batiks are a high quality, cotton fabric.
I was not able to source where Soimoi Batiks come from (possibly India), but Amazon offers a great summary of their products. Click here.

Taylor Seville Magic Pins Long Arm Leader (Soimoi Batik brand prints)
I understand the challenges of handling small sewing notions, especially when dexterity is a concern. One obstacle I face daily is picking up tiny pins with my large fingers. Taylor Seville's Magic Pins have been a game-changer for me. Each pin features a heat-resistant Comfort Grip™ Handle, making it easy to pick up and accurately insert pins, even with my less nimble fingers.
The Comfort Grip Handles on these pins are heat resistant, so you can iron on top of them or steam them without damage. They are extremely strong coming in at .8mm width and 2 3/8” long. You may never need this type of pin, but I use mine every day.
I highly recommend these longarming pins. I purchase mine online at Amazon.

Taylor Seville Magic Pins Reg Ex Long (2 ¼”)
This is another tool in my sewing toolkit that helps with efficiency. I have large fingers and struggle to pick up small, tiny things. Seville Magic Pins have a patented Handle on the end of every pin making it easy to pic up just one pin at a time.
I particularly like very long pins, so you will never find a short pin in my studio.

Taylor Seville Magic T-Pins (Size 24)
Here is a Pro Tip for anyone who does applique -- I use these T-Pins to hold my applique pieces in place on my ironing board. Once all of the pieces have been ironed, I can move that quilt square to my sewing machine for top stitching.
This is not a must have, but a nice-to-have…

Thread Spool Nets (for small or large spools of thread)
These work great on all threads that tend to unravel from the spool. I use two sizes of thread nets - the shorter 2 ½ nets on small spools of silky embroidery thread while working on my Janome quilting machine. And the longer nets that are almost 10” long while quilting on my longarm quilting machine.
The problem with the nets is that they tend to slip up and off the spool while you are sewing, and thereby defeat the purpose of holding your thread to the spool. The shorter nets can be tucked under the small spools and usually stay. I take the long nets and insert one end into the bottom of my large spool of thread. Then gently invert the net, bringing it up around the larger spool and fold back the top so about ½ of the bottom of the large spool is covered with the net. Because part of the net is inserted in the bottom of the spool, it cannot pull out after the spool has been mounted on my machine and the stitching starts.
This is a great invention! I recommend both of these products.

Wool Ironing Pad (Ecoigy Brand, 17” x 24”) (1/2” thick)
This brand of ironing pad is 100% Pure New Zealand Wool. Pressing on a wool pad results in a perfect press every time. Wool is naturally heat absorbing. It creates a space where heat is held in-between ironing pieces which help speeds up the ironing process.
Caution: Be sure to place this product on a heat safe surface. I accidently place mine over the corner of one of my cutting mats and permanently warped my cutting mat.

Pellon Wrap-N-Zap 100% Natural Cottong Batting (22” x 10 yds)
This wonderful craft product comes on the roll and in smaller packets. I have both and use them for various projects like the microwavable bowl cozy. I gave these as Christmas gifts, and everyone loved them.
Safety Reminder! Only use 100% cotton products for anything that you microwave so as to avoid a microwave fire. This includes: 100% cotton Fabric only, 100% cotton batting only and 100% cotton thread only. A Pro Tip passed on to me is to microwave in short, 2-minute spurts that do not exceed 8 minutes in total.
Wrap-N-Zap is not fire proof nor is it flame retardant. Do not attach any decorations to your microwavable quilted gifts such as buttons, Velcro, snaps or any other groovy doodads.
