To baste means to tack with long, loose stitches in preparation for sewing. The root word, baste, is ultimately of Germanic origin.
Description
Basting
Basting is the crucial first step in securing the quilt sandwich, where the quilt’s top, batting, and backing are temporarily stitched together in preparation for quilting. There are various basting methods, but I offer the longarmer’s approach for my clients. This technique involves long, running stitches placed both vertically and horizontally across the entire quilt with an unbroken thread to ensure stability and alignment throughout the quilting process which is to follow.
Additional Information
The vertical and horizontal basting lines are spaced 4, 6 or 8 inches apart, depending on the size of the quilt and the pattern pieces. I use a sturdy 30-weight polyester thread, chosen for its visibility and ease of removal after the quilting is complete. To ensure it stands out, I select a vividly bright, contrasting color that doesn’t blend with the quilt or its stitching.
